Our Border Story - 1st to 4th May 2015
Our Border Story brought to life 500 years of turbulent history in the Middle Ages, when Berwick changed hands at least thirteen times between the Scots and the English.
The weekend programme began with one of the town’s oldest annual customs, The Riding of the Bounds, which has taken place regularly in Berwick on 1st May since 1609.
Bygone Borderlands was an exhibition and programme of talks organised by Berwick Record Office and local history and heritage societies from both sides of The Border, illustrating aspects of the history of communities in The Borders in the past.
Berwick’s Horrible History was an opportunity to join the Flodden 1513 Education Team to discover Berwick’s exciting and dangerous past, from medieval knights to Tudor queens, with creative children’s activities in the Town Hall and Berwick Museum.
Raiders and Reivers recreated life in Berwick in the Middle Ages with authentic period encampments, re-enactments and demonstrations of medieval crafts, cookery, archery and combat skills. Re-enactors from “St Cuthbert’s Land”, “Knights in Battle” and “Best of Times - Worst of Times” depicted the turbulent period of Anglo-Scottish warfare from the 12th to the 16th century.
